k. Drugs and Alcohol Issues include inappropriate use or unlawful manufacture, distribution or
possession of controlled substances, abuse or misuse of prescribed medication, and being under the
influence of drugs or alcohol during work hours (the university has the right to take reasonable steps
to determine if an employee is working under the influence, including requiring non-invasive testing).
Employees with a substance abuse problem are urged to discuss the issue with their supervisor and
seek confidential assistance from the Center for Work and Family Life. See USC Drug-Free.
l. Serious Issues are conduct or behavior issues that impact the work or academic space. The following
list outlines some examples of serious conduct:
i. Falsification of University documents, including but not limited to providing false or misleading
information to take advantage of University benefits or procedures or to gain employment, or other
similar conduct.
ii. Violation of University policies against discrimination, sexual harassment, or retaliation.
iii. Use, being under the influence or possession of alcohol in violation of the University's Alcohol
related policies; or illegal use of drugs and/or being under the influence of illegal drugs while on
University property or when engaged in University business and when such conduct poses a serious
threat of harm to people, property and/or resources of the University.
iv. Drug diversion or other similar conduct.
v. Any conduct that threatens student, staff, and/or faculty safety and/or welfare.
vi. Theft including but not limited to theft of services or resources; theft or unauthorized possession or
use of University property, theft of time (falsifying time to receive pay for time not worked), or other
similar conduct.
vii. A conviction of, a plea in abeyance (until expunged), or a plea of guilty or no contest to any crime
that adversely impacts the University community or disqualifies an employee from performing their
job.
viii. Violation of applicable statutory requirements, policies, or procedures that protect the
environment and the health and safety of others, or any similar conduct.
ix. Intentionally using position/affiliation with the University of Southern California for personal gain or
in a manner that brings disrepute to the institution or otherwise adversely impacts the course of
business and/or operations of the University.
